Tips for Water Heater Energy Efficiency

Home owners who have hot water heater at home are surely looking for ways on how to save energy. A lot of researches show that one of the main contributors of increase in the energy bill is the use of hot water at home. With this, it is necessary to know some ways on how to be energy efficient when it comes to the use of this heating system.

Below are tips on energy efficiency with water heater:

Going for Tankless Unit

If you still use the traditional tank type water heating system at home, it would be more convenient and energy efficient when you replace it with a tankless unit. This tankless heater heats water on demand so it helps you save a lot of energy. This is the opposite of how tank type works where water is constantly heated even if it is not used.

Some might be hesitant to go for this tankless unit due to its initial cost. But, definitely you will enjoy its many benefits in the long run.

Setting the Temperature

If the temperature of your hot water is high it consumes more energy compared to when it is set in a lower temperature. Certainly you don’t need a very hot water so try to lower the temperature to about 120 degrees.

This practice will not only help you save energy but it could also help avoid any scalding accidents. Make sure that you also constantly check the temperature of your hot water to avoid setting it too high.

Proper Insulation of the Water Heater

The water heater unit could save a lot of energy when it is properly insulated.  This insulation also helps prevent CO2 from going into the air. See to it that you use the right type of insulation for the unit by referring to the manufacturer’s manual.

See to it that every visible pipe you see going towards or away from your water heater is proper covered. When you have a gas water heater, make sure that the insulation is not too close to the source of heat.
Strategic Location of the Heater

Before installation of your water heater, check your home for the area where there is high demand of hot water. If you reduce the travel time of hot water, it helps you save more energy.

Proper Maintenance

You certainly are not capable of doing an overall maintenance of your water heating system. With this, it is very important that you schedule maintenance for your heater at least once a year.

Phases of Garbage Disposal Installation

Proper garbage disposal installation and service should follow specific phases to ensure fewer breakdowns in the future.

Proper Unit Wiring

Depending on the manufacturer and type of garbage disposal unit you may have, some will come with wiring attached and others may not.  If the wires for your unit are not attached, you would have to remove the unit cover plate and connect the wires using the instructions in the owner’s manual from the manufacturers.

Generally, wires will be color coded, which means that you simply need to match the colors.  Do not assume this though and still rely on what the manual says.  After completely attaching all the wires, make sure that the cover plate is securely screwed back on to protect the internal components.

The Drain Flange

Once the wires are in order, the drain flange and matching mounting ring should be installed.  Plumber’s putty should be applied to the underside of the drain flange under the sink.  Make sure that the plumber’s putty is approximately half and inch thick and about 10 inches in length.

The flange should be inserted into the drain hole and pressed down evenly to make sure that it attaches properly.  The backup ring should then be snapped on together with the mounting ring and fiber gasket.

Work on alternate sides with a screwdriver to ensure that the mounting ring fits tightly against the sink.  When it is tightened evenly, you will observe some of the plumber’s putty will be squeezed out from the flange.  Trim it away with a knife.

Mounting and Connecting

The disposal can be mounted into the mounting ring at this point.  It is important to make sure that the disposal outlet faces the drain pipe connection before you tighten the disposal into place.

The disposal should then be connected to the P-trap by measuring the discharge pipe and cutting it to size.  Use the hacksaw to create a clean cut that will easily attach to the garbage disposal outlet.  Follow the instructions in the owner’s manual to make a proper connection.

The dishwater discharge tube should also be connected at this point.

Testing the Disposal

Once everything has been mounted and connected, the next phase is to test everything to make sure there are no leaks or any other problems.

Turn on the power to the garbage disposal unit.  Let water run into the sink and operate the garbage disposal unit.  Allow the unit to fill up with water a bit before operating it.

While the garbage disposal unit is running, check underneath to verify there are no leaks.  Feed the unit some food waste to ensure that everything is disposed of correctly.

Professional Repair of Slab Leaks

No matter whether you are dealing with leak repairs, both in and out of slabs, it pays to make sure that professionals are on the job.

Confirming the Source of Leaks

Any professional plumbing contractor understands that the basic step in repairing leaks is to confirm its source.  The good news is that professional plumbers are properly trained and equipped to pinpoint accurately the source of leaks.

Leak detection can also be carried out by homeowners, but without the proper training and equipment, this would mostly be a hit and miss detection procedure.

The best way to make sure that the source of leaks is properly confirmed is to have professionals come in and check the home plumbing system.

Usually when it comes to slab leaks, homeowners should check with their insurance providers.  It is not uncommon for many homeowners to be surprised that they are actually covered against flooding and similar damages that can be the result of slab leak repairs.

Repair Procedure for Leaks

Once the source of leaks has been determined, professional plumbers are now in a better position to make the necessary and proper repairs.  Water supply to the entire area or the home will be turned off until repairs are completed.

For slab leaks, the flooring material would be removed from the area where the source of the leak has been detected.  Only the necessary materials will be removed to make sure that cost of repair and replacements are kept at a minimum.

Holes will be drilled on the 4-inch concrete slab to create an initial opening to reach the affected portion of the plumbing system.  Once the source has been confined to a specific area, the access hole will be made bigger to make the necessary repairs.

A cutting tool will be used to remove the damaged portion of the pipe.  When replacing sections of home plumbing pipes, it is important that the same time of material is used.  Usually, it can be either PVC or copper piping.

Copper pipes should be welded, which means the access area must be left exposed for a few days to verify that the leak has been fixed correctly.

Covering the Access Hole

After the repair work has been done and the replacement pipe has been tested, the access hole must be covered up completely to finalize the repair.

Concrete will be mixed, poured, and evened out to match the existing surrounding slabs.  The area must be cured for a number of days before it is completely covered up to ensure that the cement mixture has hardened completely.

We can handle leak repairs, both in and out of slabs to ensure that your problem is solved properly. Call Los Angeles Plumbing today!

Restoring Water Pressure in Homes

Restoration of water pressure in homes can be done with a few simple and practical steps.

Addressing Water Leaks

It should be understood that one of the major causes of low water pressure is if there is a leak in your plumbing system.  Keep in mind that plumbing systems are designed to keep water in using a series of interconnected pipes.  When pipes spring a leak or crack, the integrity of the water pressure significantly decreases.

Regularly checking your pipes will give you an indication of possible leaks.  This will allow you to initiate the necessary repairs.  Replacing cracked or damaged pipes is one of the most effective ways to restore water pressure.

The water meter is an excellent way to judge whether there is a leak in your plumbing system or not.  Simply take note of the reading when no water fixture is being used.  Do this every two hours to see if there are changes in the reading; this will let you know if there is a leak in your plumbing system.

Eliminating Mineral Deposits

One of the most common reasons why mineral deposits start to buildup is the use of hard water.  When this condition happens, you can expect the buildup to create obstruction in your faucets, showerheads, and other plumbing fixtures.  This will lead to poor water pressure distribution.

Mineral deposit buildup can also significantly reduce the inner diameter of your plumbing pipes.  The reduced path of water will hamper its smooth flow resulting in poor water pressure that can be experienced throughout your household.

Cleaning your faucets and showerheads is a good way to remove mineral buildup on plumbing fixtures.  However, if the buildup is within the pipes, you will need professional help to restore the water pressure in your home to respectable levels.

We can help you verify if mineral deposits is the cause of your water pressure problems.  We can recommend effective solutions that you can choose from.

When All Else Fails

The fastest and easiest way to restore water pressure in your home is to call for professional help.  We have properly trained and licensed professional plumbers that can do the job in an instant.  We can carry out tests that will give you the right solution to your water pressure woes.

The reality is that there are some problems that only we can deal with.  Corrosion of pipes, major cracks and leaks, or major blockage in your water supply line are some examples of issues that contribute to poor water pressure that only trained professionals can handle properly.  If you need restoration of water pressure immediately, we can do the job for you. Bringing Your Home Up to Code

Licensed professional plumbers are your best choice to implement updates to plumbing systems so they are up to code.

Significant Changes to Plumbing Codes

According to the Plumbing Engineer, some of the most notable changes in plumbing code involve updates in energy and water conservation.  Although there are previous provisions already, the updates are meant to present amendments to cover technological advancements in the industry.

Significant changes that professional plumbers have been updated with on prevailing plumbing codes includes the:

  • Minimum number of plumbing fixtures per occupancy
  • Water consumption
  • Revised application
  • Backflow and material requirements for fixtures
  • Requirements for alternative water sources
  • Sustainable practices on water heating and consumption
  • Revised fuel gas purging
  • Revised vacuum drainage system requirements
  • Updated joint and connection requirements
  • Standards for water supply and drainage piping

Plumbing System Components

In ensuring that your plumbing system remains up to code, you must take note of its various elements.  Based on the Healthy Housing Reference Manual of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the main purpose of the plumbing system should be to deliver adequate potable hot and cold water supply to residents of a household.  The plumbing system should also be able to drain all sewage discharge and wastewater generated by plumbing fixtures into a public or private sewer disposal system.

This definition gives you a general idea of the components of the plumbing system that will come under close scrutiny from housing inspectors.  Any inadequacies in the plumbing system will be a violation of the code and can give you corresponding fines and penalties.  This emphasizes the value of professional plumbing contractors who are updated with such codes and can make sure that all installations, repairs, and maintenance work will pass any type of inspection.

Efficiency of Water Service

Updates to plumbing systems should take into account the drive to increase its efficiency in every household.  It is highly recommended that piping of house service lines must be made as short as possible.  This means that elbows and bends should be used at a minimum because they can substantially reduce the effective water pressure in your pipes and plumbing fixtures.

Los Angeles Plumbing is also updated on the fact that the house service line must be protected from freezing by burying it under at least four feet of soil.  The depth of course may vary depending on your actual location.  Local or State plumbing codes have a more accurate recommendation.

To ensure that your plumbing system is up to date with existing codes, it is necessary to ensure that the size of the service line should be at least ¾ inch.

The minimum water pressure in an average household should not be less than 40 pounds per square inch (psi).

Materials for house service should be approved copper, plastic, steel, cast iron, or wrought iron.  Cement or concrete joints should not be used and glue joints between various types of plastic must be avoided.  Female threaded PVC fitting must not be used as well.

How Video Sewer Inspection Works

When it comes to dealing with re-pipes, it’s one of those things that need a thorough inspection in order for a plumber to get the job done properly. It shouldn’t be rushed in any way. One of the most effective ways in detecting pipe leaks is through a plumber performing video sewer inspection. Expert plumbers have a vast experience in performing such a task.

An Overview of How Video Sewer Inspection Works

  1. It will start when the truck and all the equipment for monitoring and recording will be placed where your sewer pipes are located.
  2. A video camera will then be attached in the truck’s rear end by using a winch and some cables that will lower the camera down to your pipes. They will be able to retract the video camera after the inspection. Then, a tractor will be lowered into the pipes as well when the inspection begins.
  3. An expert plumber will then observe your sewer at the back of his truck. He will watch the video fed by the camera. This inspection will help him assess what the problem is depending on what he finds in your sewer pipes.
  4. On the other hand, there are pipes that do not allow the tractor to fit due to their small size. In this case, a fish will be used; after the inspection, a rope is used to get the camera back.
  5. While the inspection is on going, the technician will assess what he finds based from the video record that he uses as the reference.
  6. In some cases, tree rots are the problem. This can be solved by using equipment with blade that will be sent to the areas where there are overgrown roots for instance. On the other hand, a plumber can also use a chemical to reduce any root growth.
  7. In larger problems, your sewer pipes may need repair or excavation. For older pipes, replacement may be the solution.

There you have how video sewer inspection works! All in all, a plumber will use video sewer inspections to determine what the problem is and discuss it with you as you will be making the decision on what you want to be done next. An expert plumbing contractor will just be to guide you.

Aside from the knowledge they possess in getting it done, they need to have the best equipment possible which includes a video camera, a monitor, and other equipment needed in doing this task. They should also own a great amount of patience to successfully do this work.
